Description

🍑 Prune ‘D’Agen’ Tree – Premium European Plum for Sweet Prunes

The Prune ‘D’Agen’ Tree is a world‑famous European plum variety celebrated for its high sugar content, rich flavour, and excellent drying quality. Because of its versatility and productivity, it’s one of the most sought‑after prune trees in South Africa. This hardy, self‑fertile tree produces abundant crops of sweet, oval fruit perfect for eating fresh, drying into prunes, or making preserves.

🌿 Distinctive Features

The Prune ‘D’Agen’ Tree bears small‑to‑medium oval fruit with shiny dark‑purple skin and golden‑amber flesh. The fruit ripens from early February, developing a naturally high sugar and solids content that makes it ideal for drying. When cured, the fruit transforms into delicious, long‑lasting prunes with a deep, sweet flavour. The tree’s spring blossoms are white and fragrant, attracting bees and pollinators to your garden.

The variety is self‑pollinating, though yields improve when planted near compatible cultivars like Van Der Merwe. Its upright growth habit and lush green foliage make it both productive and ornamental.

🌱 Growth & Care

• Light: Full sun for best flowering and fruiting
• Water: Moderate watering; drought‑tolerant once established
• Soil: Well‑drained, compost‑rich soil with pH 5.5 – 6.5
• Maintenance: Prune lightly after harvest to maintain shape and airflow
• Spacing: Plant trees ± 4 m apart for optimal growth
• Climate: Performs well in South African highveld and warm coastal regions

Because the Prune ‘D’Agen’ Tree thrives in sunny, sheltered positions, it’s ideal for home orchards and small farms. Regular feeding in spring and early summer promotes vigorous growth and abundant fruiting.

🏡 Landscape Use

Use Prune ‘D’Agen’ Tree as a focal point in fruit gardens or mixed orchard layouts. Its spring blossoms add charm, while its summer fruit provides colour and sweetness. In addition, it pairs beautifully with peaches, nectarines, and apricots for a diverse fruit collection.
