Description

🌿 Gomphostigma virgatum — Graceful, Hardy, and Water‑wise

The Gomphostigma virgatum, commonly known as River Star or Otter Bush, is a graceful South African shrub admired for its silvery foliage and delicate white flowers. It thrives near water features, ponds, and damp garden areas, adding a soft, shimmering texture to landscapes. Because of its resilience and elegant form, the Gomphostigma virgatum is ideal for both natural and formal garden designs.

🌱 Growth & Appearance

The Gomphostigma virgatum grows upright with slender, woody stems covered in fine, silvery‑grey leaves. Its foliage gives the plant a light, airy appearance that contrasts beautifully with darker greens. During spring and summer, clusters of small white flowers appear at the tips of the stems, creating a gentle, star‑like display. Moreover, its subtle fragrance and soft texture make it a favourite for wildlife gardens and water‑edge plantings.

Because of its narrow growth habit, the plant fits perfectly in pots, borders, and mixed beds. It establishes quickly and maintains its shape with minimal pruning.

🌞 Growing Conditions

• 🌞 Prefers full sun for best flowering and foliage colour.
• 🌱 Grows well in moist, well‑drained soil.
• 💧 Water regularly during establishment, then moderately once mature.
• 🌡️ Hardy in most South African climates, including Gauteng and coastal regions.

After flowering, prune lightly to encourage fresh growth and maintain a neat form. Feed annually with compost to support healthy roots and vibrant foliage. Consequently, the Gomphostigma virgatum remains lush and attractive throughout the year.

🏡 Landscape & Use

The Gomphostigma virgatum is perfect for water‑wise gardens, ponds, and natural landscapes. Its silvery leaves and white flowers complement indigenous plantings beautifully. In addition, it attracts butterflies and pollinators, enhancing biodiversity. Because of its adaptability and low maintenance, it’s a top choice for eco‑friendly garden designs.
