Description

🌺 Jatropha integerrima – Peregrina

The Jatropha integerrima, also called Peregrina or Spicy Jatropha, is a tropical evergreen shrub that bursts with vivid red flowers and glossy green leaves. Because it thrives in warm climates, it performs beautifully in South African gardens. Moreover, its compact growth habit and continuous flowering make it ideal for patios, borders, and decorative containers.

🌸 Distinctive Features

The Jatropha integerrima produces clusters of bright red, five‑petaled flowers that bloom almost all year. Each flower features a small yellow center that attracts butterflies and bees, adding movement and life to your garden. The smooth, elliptical leaves are deep green and glossy, creating a striking contrast against the vibrant blooms. When grown in a 5 L nursery bag, the plant keeps a neat, natural shape that suits both residential and commercial landscapes. As a result, it’s a favourite among landscapers and home gardeners alike.

🌱 Growth & Care

• Light: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade
• Water: Needs moderate watering; avoid waterlogging
• Soil: Grows best in well‑drained, compost‑rich soil
• Maintenance: Prune lightly after flowering to encourage bushier growth
• Climate: Perfect for South African subtropical and coastal regions

Because the Jatropha integerrima adapts easily to different conditions, it remains one of the most reliable tropical shrubs. Regular feeding during the growing season enhances flowering and leaf colour, while mulching helps retain soil moisture. Consequently, the plant stays lush and healthy throughout the year.

🏡 Landscape Use

Use Peregrina as a focal point in mixed garden beds, along pathways, or in decorative pots. Its vivid red flowers pair beautifully with green or silver‑leafed plants, creating a dynamic visual contrast. In addition, it’s an excellent choice for butterfly gardens and tropical‑style landscapes.
