🌾 Pennisetum Rubra

Pennisetum Rubra (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’), commonly known as Purple Fountain Grass, is one of the most striking ornamental grasses for modern landscapes. Its rich burgundy‑purple foliage and soft, arching plumes bring movement, colour, and texture to any garden. As highlighted in your product editor, it is a standout choice for bold, sculptural planting and water‑wise design .

🌸 Why Pennisetum Rubra Is a Landscape Favourite

This grass is prized for its dramatic colour, which intensifies in full sun. The long, feathery flower spikes sway gently in the breeze, adding softness and rhythm to borders, rockeries, and contemporary garden layouts. Because it thrives in heat and requires minimal water once established, Pennisetum Rubra performs exceptionally well in South African climates.

Its upright, fountain‑shaped form makes it ideal for feature planting, mass planting, and container displays. The plumes appear from late spring through autumn, creating long‑lasting seasonal interest. In addition, the plant’s deep colour contrasts beautifully with greens, silvers, and bright flowering perennials.

🌿 How to Grow and Care for Pennisetum Rubra

This variety prefers full sun and well‑drained soil. It is low‑maintenance and thrives with minimal care, making it perfect for busy gardeners and large landscape projects. Light trimming at the end of winter encourages fresh new growth for the coming season. Because it is drought‑tolerant once established, it fits perfectly into water‑wise and modern gravel‑style gardens.

Although it is often grown as a perennial in warm regions, it may behave as an annual in colder microclimates. However, its fast growth ensures a full, lush display each season.
