Description

🌿 Spiraea × vanhouttei ‘Pink Ice’ – Variegated Bridal Wreath with Soft Pink Spring Colour

The Spiraea × vanhouttei ‘Pink Ice’ is a rare and highly decorative spirea variety known for its striking variegated foliage and delicate pink‑tinted spring blooms. Because it combines colourful leaves with the classic cascading shape of bridal wreath spireas, gardeners love using it as a feature shrub, border accent, or soft hedge. Its unique foliage makes it stand out even when not in flower.

🌸 Distinctive Features

The Spiraea × vanhouttei ‘Pink Ice’ produces masses of small white flowers that open with a subtle pink blush, giving the shrub a gentle pastel glow in early spring. These blooms appear along gracefully arching stems, creating the iconic “bridal wreath” effect.

Its foliage is where the plant truly shines: each leaf displays natural cream‑white variegation splashed across fresh green, often with hints of soft pink on new growth. This colourful pattern remains attractive throughout the growing season, adding brightness and texture to any garden.

Because the plant grows naturally rounded and arching, it maintains a tidy, elegant shape with very little effort.

🌿 Growth & Care

• Light: Full sun to light shade
• Water: Moderate watering; prefers well‑drained soil
• Soil: Loamy, fertile soil with good drainage
• Temperature: Hardy and tolerant of cold; thrives in South African climates
• Growth: Medium‑sized shrub with arching branches

Because the Spiraea × vanhouttei ‘Pink Ice’ is hardy and adaptable, it performs reliably in South African gardens. Additionally, it tolerates a wide range of soil types and requires minimal care once established. With proper pruning, it produces even more flowers each season and maintains its elegant, cascading form.
