Description
The Sensation mango tree (Mangifera indica) is a striking cultivar known for its deep yellow flesh and plum-red skin, making it a standout in any edible landscape. It’s a late-season variety, typically ripening from February to April in South Africa, and is well-suited to subtropical climates like Gauteng—provided it’s protected from frost in its early years.
Here’s a care snapshot:
- Size: Grows up to 8 m tall with a 6 m spread—best for open spaces.
- Fruit: Medium-sized, ovate fruit with a sweet, syrupy flavor and no fibre. The skin blushes purple-red over yellow when ripe.
- Soil: Prefers deep, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6.0–7.2.
- Watering: Every 2–3 days during flowering and fruiting; reduce in winter.
- Fertilizer: Apply a nitrogen-rich rapid-release feed before flowering, and a slow-release option every 4–5 months.
- Pruning: Maintain 3–4 main branches and remove dead or diseased wood to improve airflow.
- Mulching: Use pine bark or composted mulch year-round, keeping it clear of the trunk.
It’s a heavy bearer but may show alternate bearing in some seasons. The fruit is excellent fresh, in salads, or preserved.
