Description

The Tommy Atkins mango tree (Mangifera indica) is a popular and hardy cultivar known for its vibrant fruit and resilience—perfect for South African gardens with the right microclimate. It’s an evergreen tree that can reach about 4–5 meters in height and width, with a deep taproot system and surface-feeding roots.

Here’s a quick care guide:

  • Sunlight: Full to partial sun is ideal—plenty of warmth helps sweeten the fruit.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining loamy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.2. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Watering: Focus watering during flowering—every 2–3 days when buds appear. Otherwise, let rainfall do the work.
  • Fertilizing: Use a rapid-release nitrogen fertilizer just before flowering. A slow-release option every 4–5 months also works well.
  • Mulching: Organic mulch like pine bark helps retain moisture and regulate pH. Keep it clear of the trunk to prevent rot.
  • Pruning: Maintain 3–4 main branches and remove dead wood to encourage airflow and fruiting.

The fruit itself is medium to large, with a thick skin that blushes red, yellow, and purple. It’s not the sweetest mango, but it’s prized for its long shelf life, transport resilience, and consistent yield
