🍑 Plum ‘Pioneer’ is a robust Japanese plum cultivar, well-suited to South African conditions and known for its early harvest and excellent eating quality.

Botanical Name: Prunus salicina ‘Pioneer’ Common Name: Pioneer Japanese Plum

🍈 Fruit Description: Produces round, bright red plums with light yellow flesh that turns reddish when fully ripe. The fruit is sweet, juicy, and melting in texture, making it ideal for fresh eating or preserves.

🌸 Flowering & Pollination:

  • Flowers in late August to early September
  • Self-compatible, but planting with cultivars like African Rose can improve fruit set
  • Bears on both spurs and shoots, with high flower intensity

🌞 Light & Position:

  • Requires full sun for optimal fruiting
  • Best planted in a sheltered, well-drained location

🌱 Soil & Planting:

  • Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–6.8)
  • Enrich planting hole with acid compost to support root development

💧 Watering:

  • Moderate water needs
  • Deep, consistent watering during fruiting season enhances yield and flavour

🌿 Growth Habit:
