Description

🍊 Citrus Naartjie Empress Mandarin Plant

🌱 A premium soft‑citrus variety known for its exceptional sweetness, easy‑peel skin, and rich mandarin aroma. This cultivar is ideal for gardeners who want a reliable, high‑yielding naartjie tree that performs beautifully in South African gardens.

🍊 Fruit Quality of the Empress Mandarin

The fruit is medium‑sized, bright orange, and filled with sweet, juicy segments that separate easily. Its flavour is rich, aromatic, and perfectly balanced — making it ideal for:

• Fresh snacking • Juicing • Lunchboxes • Fruit salads • Light desserts

Typically ripens in mid‑season, offering a generous harvest window with consistently high‑quality fruit.

☀️ Light Requirements This mandarin thrives in full sun, ideally receiving 6–8 hours of sunlight daily. A warm, bright position supports strong flowering, excellent fruit colour, and reliable fruit set.

💧 Watering & Soil Prefers well‑drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with compost. Deep watering during establishment encourages a strong root system. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and protects the roots during hot weather. Apply a citrus fertilizer in early spring and midsummer to maintain vigour and fruiting performance.

🌿 Growth Habit & Tree Features This variety forms a compact, rounded canopy with glossy green leaves and fragrant blossoms. It is self‑fertile, meaning it produces fruit without needing a second tree. Suitable for gardens, small orchards, and large pots, it requires only light pruning to maintain shape and airflow.

🌡️ Climate Suitability The Citrus Naartjie Empress Mandarin Plant thrives in Gauteng’s temperate climate and performs well in coastal, subtropical, and mild inland regions. Young trees benefit from frost protection during cold snaps.
