Description

🔴 Pomegranate ‘Wonderful’ – Large, Sweet, Ruby‑Red Fruit

One of the most popular and reliable pomegranate varieties grown worldwide, celebrated for its large, deep‑red fruit, sweet‑tart flavour, and high juice content. Because of its exceptional productivity and striking ornamental value, it has become a favourite among South African gardeners, homesteads, and small orchards. This hardy fruit tree delivers beauty, resilience, and abundant harvests year after year.

🌿 Distinctive Features

Produces big, glossy, ruby‑red fruit with firm, jewel‑like arils inside. These arils are packed with flavour, offering a perfect balance of sweetness and refreshing tartness. The fruit is excellent for fresh eating, juicing, smoothies, salads, and preserves. In addition, the tree displays beautiful orange‑red blossoms in spring, attracting bees and pollinators while adding vibrant colour to your garden.

The foliage is lush and bright green, forming a dense, rounded shrub or small tree. Its attractive growth habit makes it ideal for both ornamental and edible landscapes.

🌱 Growth & Care

• Light: Full sun for maximum flowering and fruiting
• Water: Moderate watering; drought‑tolerant once established
• Soil: Well‑drained, sandy‑loam or compost‑rich soil
• Maintenance: Light pruning after harvest to shape and encourage airflow
• Climate: Performs exceptionally well in South African bushveld, lowveld, and warm coastal regions

Because the Pomegranate ‘Wonderful’ thrives in hot, dry climates, it is perfect for water‑wise gardens. It handles heat, wind, and poor soil better than most fruit trees, making it one of the easiest fruiting plants to grow. Regular feeding in spring improves flowering and boosts fruit size.

🏡 Landscape Use

A feature shrub, fruiting hedge, or small ornamental tree. Its bright blossoms and glossy fruit add colour and interest throughout the growing season. Moreover, it pairs beautifully with figs, olives, lemons, and other Mediterranean‑style plants.
