Description

🌿 Ilex mitis – Cape Holly

The Ilex mitis, commonly known as the Cape Holly, is a beautiful evergreen tree native to southern Africa. It stands out for its glossy dark‑green leaves and clusters of bright red berries that appear seasonally. Because of its elegant shape and vibrant foliage, this tree adds a refined, natural charm to gardens, landscapes, and outdoor spaces across South Africa.

🍃 Distinctive Features

The Cape Holly has smooth, elliptical leaves with a deep green sheen and a prominent midrib. During fruiting season, it produces clusters of berries that range from yellowish‑green to bright red, creating a striking contrast against the foliage. These berries attract birds, making the tree a lively addition to any garden. Moreover, its upright growth habit and dense canopy provide excellent shade and structure for landscape designs.

🌱 Growth & Care

• Light: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade
• Water: Moderate watering; keep soil moist but not waterlogged
• Soil: Well‑drained, compost‑rich mix
• Maintenance: Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage new growth
• Climate: Ideal for South African highveld and coastal regions

Because the Ilex mitis adapts easily to different conditions, it thrives in both residential and commercial gardens. Regular feeding during spring and summer promotes lush foliage and healthy berry production. As a result, it remains vibrant throughout the year with minimal maintenance.

🏡 Landscape Use

Use the Cape Holly as a feature tree in garden beds, along pathways, or near patios. Its glossy leaves and colourful berries complement other indigenous plants beautifully. In addition, it works well in mixed landscapes, providing contrast and texture alongside shrubs and flowering species.
